Minekill, Upgrades and Transparency 5/27/26
Dear Residents of Ashland,
Since my last update, there have been several changes within our town. In the interest of transparency, I would like to address these developments with you directly.
First, I want to discuss the sunsetting of the Minekill program. We recognize the importance of this long-standing program and the value it has provided over the decades. However, due to rising costs and increasing regulatory requirements, we have made the difficult decision to conclude the program at this time.
To provide some context, the program's expenses reached 275% of its allocated budget. Furthermore, because the program involved transportation, it fell under the New York State definition of a day camp. This classification requires counselors and directors to complete numerous certifications prior to the start date—a requirement the town was not positioned to meet within the necessary timeframe.
On a more positive note, the town is preparing for the 250th anniversary of our country. As you drive down Route 23, you will notice American flags and commemorative banners. We will soon be adding flowers to the bridge, Town Hall, and the town park pavilion. We are also in the process of erecting a new flagpole at the park, with more updates to follow.
Regarding municipal operations, we have upgraded our IT protection and replaced several computers at Town Hall to comply with state regulations and improve efficiency. This is part of a multi-year plan to modernize our hardware and website to better serve our residents. Additionally, we will soon be sealcoating the Town Hall parking lot and adding new landscaping.

Jetter Ports have also been installed in the town's sewer system. These ports will help to provide easier maintenance and provide quick access to the line in an emergency. A necessary step to make sure that this vital part of the utilities stays functioning.

While Memorial Day weekend is in our rearview mirrors let us not forget the sacrifices made by those who came before us. Over the weekend I could not help but think of those in my life that have served and have come back from war torn regions and how lucky my family is that we had the best outcome possible. Love your country, live with pride and don't forget those who died to make this the greatest country in the world
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me. I am happy to discuss these matters with you.

Best regards,
Chris Hamilton
Ashland Supervisor
